GSM means grams per square meter. It is a common way to describe fabric weight. Buyers often use GSM to compare fabrics, control product feel, estimate cost, and confirm whether bulk fabric matches the approved sample.
But GSM is not perfectly fixed. Fabric weight can vary because of yarn, construction, tension, moisture, finishing, shrinkage, width, and measurement method.
Knowledge pill: GSM is a useful specification, but it should be managed with tolerance. A target of 200 GSM usually means an acceptable range, not every meter of fabric measuring exactly 200 GSM.
Why GSM matters
GSM affects:

The correct tolerance depends on fabric type, end use, and production process. Technical fabrics may require tighter control than casual fabrics, but tighter tolerance can increase cost and rejection risk.
Roll-to-roll and within-roll variation
GSM can vary between rolls and within the same roll. Variation may appear at the beginning, middle, or end of production.
Inspectors should record:
- Roll number
- Sampling position
- Test method
- Measured GSM
- Average result
- Minimum and maximum result
One small cutting may not represent the whole lot. For important orders, measure several positions.
GSM and fabric performance
GSM is useful, but it does not fully describe performance.
Two fabrics with the same GSM can differ in:
- Composition

- Density
- Thickness
- Stretch

- Air permeability
- Hand feel
- Pilling

- Coating performance
Do not choose fabric by GSM alone.
GSM in coated and laminated fabrics
For coated, laminated, or composite fabrics, total GSM may include several layers.
Ask whether the quoted GSM refers to:
- Base fabric only
- Coating weight
- Film or membrane weight
- Adhesive layer
- Total finished fabric
This distinction matters for technical textiles and cost comparison.
