Before inspection, confirm what the fabric should be compared against.

  • Thickness for technical, coated, foam, or laminated materials
  • Roll-to-roll variation

Width and GSM can vary within normal tolerance. The important point is whether the variation stays inside the agreed range.

Check shade consistency

Shade variation can cause serious garment or product issues, especially when panels from different rolls are cut together.

Inspect:

  • Roll-to-roll shade
  • Edge-to-center shade
  • Beginning-to-end shade within a roll
  • Shade lot separation
  • Matching against approved lab dip or standard

For apparel, shade bands should be managed before cutting. For technical products, shade may be less critical, but uneven colour can still signal process instability.

Review physical performance

Some performance checks can be done during inspection, while others need lab testing.

Possible checks include:

  • Shrinkage after washing or heat exposure
  • Colour fastness
  • Pilling or abrasion
  • Tensile, tear, burst, or seam strength
  • Stretch and recovery
  • Water resistance or absorbency
  • Peel strength for laminated fabrics
  • Conductivity, flame resistance, filtration, or other technical properties

Inspection should follow the fabric’s end use. A lining, hoodie fabric, industrial tape, and coated technical textile do not need the same tests.

Use a defect grading method

Many fabric inspections use a point system. Defects are assigned points based on size or severity, and the roll is accepted or rejected according to an agreed limit.

The buyer and supplier should agree:

  • Which inspection standard is used
  • What counts as a major defect
  • Acceptable defect points per roll or per 100 square yards/meters
  • Whether defects can be cut around
  • Whether compensation, replacement, or sorting is required

Even a simple agreed checklist is better than no inspection standard.

Check packing and roll condition

Good fabric can be damaged by poor packing.
